Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026 Opening

Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026

The 2026 edition of Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026 officially opened on 21 May at Hall 11 of the National Agricultural Exhibition Center. Under the annual theme LAND TRACE, this year’s Fair approaches contemporary art through the lenses of geo-cultural perspectives and historical geography, seeking to reactivate local experiences and embodied perceptions across multiple contexts, while further mapping the nuanced landscape of contemporary art amid ongoing processes of value reconfiguration. From 21 to 24 May, a total of 144 participating institutions from 49 cities across 22 countries have gathered within the Fair’s nearly 20,000-square-meter exhibition space. Together with the “108 Hours of Beijing” unfolding across the city during the Fair period, the Fair creates a shared spatial and temporal experience, inviting audiences to tune into the art zone of Beijing. The opening day was met with an enthusiastic response and vibrant atmosphere, with many participating galleries reporting strong sales and positive feedback.

Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026 continues to collaborate with major concurrent art events including Beijing Design Week, Gallery Weekend Beijing. Over the past several years, these collective efforts have gradually shaped the “Beijing Art Season” into a cultural initiative of considerable scale and influence. As one of its central driving forces, Beijing Dangdai contributes to the vibrant and diverse artistic atmosphere that transforms Beijing each May, further positioning the city as a significant destination on the global art calendar. As the largest large-scale art fair taking place in Beijing this year, the opening of Beijing Dangdai Art Fair also marks the official launch of the 2026 Beijing Art Season.

At this year’s edition of the Beijing Dangdai Art Fair, The Macallan brings its distinctive brand aesthetics and immersive experiences to further illuminate the rich connections between art and whisky, inviting audiences to experience the unique resonance where time, creativity, craftsmanship, and contemporary art converge.

LAND TRACE refers both to the traces of artistic transformation and to forms of locally rooted experience. It evokes paths traced through the city, while also pointing toward encounters, companionship, and shared movement between individuals. At the Fair, the multiple meanings embedded within LAND TRACE are translated into tangible forms and visual expressions. Through the participation of 144 institutions, nearly one thousand artists, and over ten thousand artworks, the Fair unfolds as an ever-expanding artistic landscape. The Fair’s eight sectors — VALUE, FUTURE, WONDER, DIGITALLATION, ENERGY, MEETING, CO-TIME, and SPECIAL ART PROJECT — respond from different perspectives to the diverse structures and lived trajectories of the contemporary art ecosystem, allowing the flows and relationships implied by LAND TRACE to materialise throughout the exhibition space.

The VALUE and FUTURE sectors bring together 101 galleries from around the world, including 40 galleries making their debut at Beijing Dangdai Art Fair. Alongside the steady growth of international participation, the Fair continues to attract an increasing number of institutions from emerging cities across China, presenting a wide spectrum of aesthetic positions and artistic values throughout the exhibition space. Together, they further reflect Beijing Dangdai’s enduring commitment to an open and pluralistic form of “locality” grounded within a global perspective.

“Curatorial” is not only one of the key working methodologies of Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026, but also an ongoing response to the reinvention of the art fair model itself. By introducing curatorial thinking into an increasingly open and expansive exhibition framework, the Fair continues to explore new organisational logics and activate new spaces of value. Interwoven through curatorial narratives, the Fair’s multi-layered contents become interconnected, forming continuously unfolding “LAND TRACE” trajectories across the exhibition space.

Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026 Special Curated Sector

Seven Europe-based participating galleries are brought together within a special curated sector spanning over 100 square meters at the Fair, including Galerie Christophe Gaillard, Galerie Thomas Schulte, Meyer Riegger Wolff, PSM, Hua International, Collecta, and Galerie Judin. Curated by Yang Tiange under the title “In the Cool of Summer,” the sector brings together 52 works that enter into dialogue with LAND TRACE within the early summer atmosphere of Beijing, while proposing a shared vision that transcends cultural and geographical boundaries.

To continuously encourage the scholarly and experimental practices of participating institutions, Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026 has established the Best Booth Award since its founding, recognising exhibitors that demonstrate outstanding exploration and innovation in exhibition curation and presentation. This year’s jury includes Ye Ying, Editor-in-Chief of The Art Journal; You Yang, Director of X Museum; Yang Beichen, Director of MACA Art Center; Yuan Bing, Founder of Eclosion Collection + Projects and Vince Guo, Founder of the Soil Collection. Following the votes of the five jurors, Hua International was awarded this year’s Best Booth Award. The winning gallery will receive a premier booth location at the next edition of Beijing Dangdai Art Fair.

Artist solo exhibitions, as one of the most distinctive and intellectually concentrated modes of presentation, also represent an important manifestation of curatorial thinking within the context of the art fair. This year, 25 participating institutions present artist solo exhibitions or individual projects, collectively demonstrating galleries’ long-term commitment to and in-depth engagement with the artistic trajectories of their represented artists. In doing so, Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026 further expands beyond the notion of the art fair as a purely transactional setting, reinforcing its unique role as a platform grounded in curatorial and scholarly discourse.

Among them, works by 6 artists and collectives are also presented in the off-site exhibition “WONDER· China World Mall” at China World Mall, creating a resonance between the fair venue and the urban environment, while further integrating public art into the fabric of city space and everyday life.

Meanwhile, the SPECIAL ART PROJECT sector gathers 19 participating institutions, including 8 non-profit art organisations, collectively exploring the broader energies and possibilities of art beyond its conventional forms and established industry structures.Tan Zhuo’s solo exhibition is also specially presented at the VIP Lounge of the Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026, showcasing her unique identity as both an actress and an artist.

Centered around the National Agricultural Exhibition Center, Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026 connects with museums, cultural institutions, collections, and urban lifestyle venues across the city. From the launch of the Beijing Art Ecosystem Visits on 20 May through to the closing of the Fair on 24 May, the “108 Hours of Beijing” unfolds continuously throughout the city, extending art beyond the exhibition halls and into the urban fabric itself. Within this multidimensional artistic context, the project reactivates perceptions of “Beijing Time” while awakening the city’s latent artistic vitality.

“LAND TRACE” unfolds not only across geography, cities, and human encounters, but also extends into digital space and technological dimensions. Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026 continues to advance the ongoing development of its official application, 北京当代 Artloop, gradually establishing it as an important digital gateway connecting the city’s art ecosystem. Through core functions such as the Art Map, visitors are able to search and locate art institutions and lifestyle venues across the city within a single platform, access exclusive VIP privileges offered by the Fair, and navigate seamlessly between dispersed cultural sites. In doing so, the various artistic scenes distributed throughout the city become newly connected and perceptible, allowing the “Art Season” to evolve from a temporally concentrated event into an urban lifestyle that can be continuously experienced and engaged with.

Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026

Since its founding in 2018, Beijing Dangdai Art Fair has consistently pursued a set of interrelated ambitions: to build an art fair for Beijing that corresponds to its position as a cultural capital; to present an art fair for China that reflects the richness and complexity of its cultural landscape; and to offer the world an art fair that explores new models grounded in its own local experience. Over eight years of continuous practice and evolution, these multiple aspirations have gradually unfolded and deepened, continually expanding both the boundaries of the art fair model and its possibilities within the contemporary context. Throughout this process, the lived realities of the city have been continuously activated and rearticulated, while new expressions and values within Chinese contemporary art have continued to emerge. From this ongoing dynamic arises a form of cultural creativity and connectivity capable of engaging with the wider world.

Following its opening day, Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2026 will continue with a second VIP Preview day on 22 May, before officially opening to the public from 23 to 24 May.
