Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2025 will release a series of posters centered on the works exhibited at the fair. These works not only offer possible interpretations and responses to the theme “CONCAVE & CONVEX”, but also serve as highlights previews of important works and participating galleries at the fair. The poster shared this time is from the Leo Gallery, a new work by Bian Qing.

Bian Qing’s practice is rooted in the analytical deconstruction of traditional Chinese landscape painting. He deconstructs its visual elements and brushwork techniques and then reconfigures them through the lens of modernist painting. In his work, “landscape” is no longer a fixed historical symbol but becomes a constantly activated and re-activated system of visual language. Since 2010, he has taken landscape as a central thread in his artistic exploration, integrating elements from daily life while navigating the dynamic balance between figuration and abstraction, the Eastern and the Western artistic traditions.

The Unravelled Collection 2025037 extends this methodology of deconstruction and reconstruction. The interplay of fluid curves and rigid structures in the composition simultaneously echoes the generative logic of traditional landscape painting while incorporating spatial relationships drawn from Western painting conventions. As a result, it imbues dynamic tension into the work – between softness and solidity, order and randomness, concavity and convexity. Rather than following a predetermined schema, the forms evolve organically through the act of painting itself – much like the concept of “unraveling”, a process of breaking through impasses and opening up new artistic possibilities via constant adjustment and reformulation. The presence of yellow in the composition carries both personal and symbolic significance, infusing the work with a synesthetic atmosphere that keeps it in a state of flux and openness.
