Poster of Artworks for Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2025|Liu Xuguang:Prime Field 2021
Beijing Dangdai Art Fair 2025 will release a series of posters centered on the works exhibited at the fair. These works not only offer possible interpretations and responses to the theme “CONCAVE & CONVEX”, but also serve as highlights previews of important works and participating galleries at the fair. The poster shared this time is from the Tokyo Gallery+Beijing Tokyo Art Projects, an abstract work by Liu Xuguang that embodies oriental characteristics.
Liu Xuguang’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in Eastern cultural traditions and philosophical thought. Influenced by the materiality and existential inquiries emphasized by the Japanese Mono-ha movement, Liu Xuguang proposes the artistic concept of “physicality/perception”, exploring the evolving relationship between the physical quality of objects and human perception over time. Drawing from the numbers and symbols in the Hetu Luoshu (The Yellow River Chart and the Inscription of River Luo), the I Ching (Book of Changes) and the Five Elements Theory, which explain the transformations of heaven and earth, he navigates between heaven and earth through various media including installation, performance, moving image and painting. With his unique artistic language, Liu manages to capture the trajectories of the flow of time and the textures of space folding.
Prime Field 2021 is a representative piece from Liu Xuguang’s Prime Field (yan chang) series. In the Chinese title, “衍” (yan) signifies calculation and derivation, and “场” (chang), canvas, space and field. The work features the recurring motif of “卜”, a signature symbol in Liu’s art, arranged rhythmically and repeatedly in a structured array and interspersed with the numbers from 0 to 9. The dynamically harmonious interplay mirrors the relationship between Bagua diagram and the binary system – divergent in form and convergent in essence. The composition reminds people of both integrated circuit diagrams when viewed from above, and constellation charts when gazing at the night sky. Beneath the seemingly futile attempts at mathematical calculation and divination, Liu Xuguang’s highly personal and profoundly localized abstract language is fully revealed.
